India’s car market is running hot as we move into the second quarter of 2026. March numbers reveal a remarkable 24.99% year-on-year (YoY) growth among the top 25 best-selling cars, with combined sales hitting an impressive 3,34,794 units—up from 2,67,866 units in March 2025. Leading this charge is the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which clocked 21,224 units last month, up a whopping 37.28% YoY. It’s quite the feat, especially when you consider the ongoing SUV craze sweeping across the country.
Tata Motors continued its strong momentum, with the Punch and Nexon SUVs following closely behind the Dzire. The Punch sold 20,977 units (+18% YoY), while the Nexon posted 19,810 units (+21% YoY). SUVs in general are dominating the best-seller charts, but the Dzire’s stellar performance—fueled by robust fleet demand and its legendary fuel efficiency—shows there’s still plenty of love for compact sedans. Meanwhile, Hyundai Creta held steady in fourth place despite a slight dip, and Maruti’s Ertiga, WagonR, and Baleno kept their volumes healthy. The Baleno, in particular, saw a sharp 32.65% YoY increase.
SUVs and Compact Cars: Market Movers
If you look at the top 10 cars alone, they contributed an impressive 1,76,586 units to March’s numbers, marking an 11.72% YoY jump from the previous year. SUVs and compact cars are clearly the market’s backbone, with Maruti Suzuki maintaining a commanding presence. Tata Motors and Mahindra are also keeping the pressure on, ensuring buyers have plenty of choices.
In terms of safety, 2026 has seen EVs dominate crash test ratings, but the Kia Seltos is leading a safety revolution among internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This shift is likely to influence consumer preferences as buyers become ever more safety-conscious.
Eyes on April & Upcoming Launches
Looking ahead, April 2026 is already shaping up to be interesting. The Dzire remains the top seller, while Tata’s Punch and Nexon aren’t letting up. New launches, like the MG Majestor (arriving April 20) and the updated Volkswagen Taigun (price reveal on April 9), could shake up the rankings further as buyers look for the latest and greatest.
With a total after-sales network now spanning 5,926 Maruti Suzuki touchpoints in 3,000 cities and towns, India’s top carmakers are clearly preparing for sustained demand. All signs point to another strong quarter ahead for the auto sector.
