Tensions between the United States and Iran surged this weekend after three American soldiers were killed in separate, Iran-linked incidents in Iraq and Jordan on July 19 and 20, 2026. The deadly escalation comes amid an eighth straight night of US retaliatory airstrikes and a flurry of missile and drone attacks across the region.
Details of the Attacks
On Saturday, July 20, a US service member was killed in northern Iraq during the disposal of an Iranian attack drone, according to US Central Command (Centcom). The soldier, who was not a bomb technician, was struck by debris or fragments during the controlled detonation of the downed drone. A second service member was wounded in the incident. The Pentagon confirmed the death and said the victim’s identity would be released after next of kin are notified.
Just a day earlier, on Friday, July 19, two more US soldiers were killed and another went missing during an Iranian strike on a military base in Jordan. According to a US official, human remains recovered at the scene are believed to belong to the missing soldier, though positive identification is pending at Dover Air Force Base.
Regional Violence and Escalation
The attacks in Iraq and Jordan mark the first deadly strikes on US troops in the region this month, but they’re part of a much wider escalation. Iranian state media reported strikes by US forces near Sirik in southern Iran and Shadegan, close to the Iraq border, while US airstrikes have targeted Iran’s coastal surveillance, missile, and drone storage facilities.
Meanwhile, Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on US military assets at Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and the Ali Al Salem airbase. Bahraini air defenses intercepted another Iranian attack, and Jordanian forces shot down three Iranian missiles—prompting Amman to summon Iran’s charge d’affaires in protest.
The US military blockade of Iranian ports has been reimposed, and Tehran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, choking a vital artery for global oil shipments.
