East Zone have finally broken their long title drought, clinching the 2026-27 Duleep Trophy after drawing with South Zone in the final at Chennai on Thursday. This marks only the third time East Zone have lifted the prestigious trophy, their previous successes coming back-to-back over a decade ago, in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.
The final turned into a showcase of East Zone’s all-round strength and composure. By stumps on Day 5, East Zone had posted a mammoth 708 in their first innings, followed by 212 for 5 in the second, giving them a virtually unassailable lead of 584 runs. With the rules not incentivizing teams to force outright wins once such a commanding lead is achieved, the outcome became a formality, even before the last ball was bowled on Chepauk’s typically docile surface.
Shami and Mukesh Swing Momentum
Veteran seamer Mohammad Shami was at his best, ripping through South Zone’s batting with decisive spells and picking up 2 for 42. Mukesh Kumar provided crucial support, claiming 3 for 62, including the important wicket of Devdutt Padikkal, who top-scored for South with 62. South Zone’s first-innings total of 336 was built on gritty batting from Tilak Varma—who notched a patient 99, his third consecutive fifty-plus score in the tournament—but the rest of the lineup struggled to weather the storm.
Kishan and Mohan Dominate with the Bat
Ishan Kishan lit up the final with a whirlwind 80 in the second innings, bringing up his half-century in just 66 balls, while Mohan contributed a steady 52. The pair’s aggressive approach hinted at a possible declaration, but with a lead that had already ballooned to 760 runs by the second session of Day 5, East Zone kept piling on the pressure. Despite a spirited 66-run partnership between South’s Tilak and Shreyas Gopal, resistance proved futile as East Zone’s lead remained out of reach. With the match drawn, East Zone’s dominance across all five days was enough to secure the silverware.
