India’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to sizzle, with September 2026 figures showing a sharp uptick across most categories. According to Vahan Dashboard data compiled from nearly every RTO nationwide, total registered EV sales hit 3,33,571 units last month—a 10% jump from August’s 3,02,746. The surge spans two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, even as some segments posted slight declines.

Passenger EVs and Market Leaders

Electric passenger vehicle registrations soared to 35,048 units, up a staggering 95.4% compared to the same month last year. Tata Motors continues its reign with a commanding 42.2% share, followed by Mahindra. Together, Tata and Mahindra accounted for 64.4% of electric car registrations in September. MG Motor claimed third place, recording 5,242 units and a 9.1% year-on-year growth, though their market share slid to 15% as the overall EV market outpaced their gains. Maruti Suzuki captured a modest 3.1% share, while BYD registered 836 cars—a 14.2% YoY increase.

Two- and Three-Wheeler Surge, but Buses Lag

Electric two-wheelers (E2W) led the charge with 2,07,314 units sold in September, up from 1,84,696 in August. Three-wheeler (E3W) sales in the L5 Passenger category also climbed, hitting 44,738 units versus 41,431 the prior month. E-rickshaws (29,509 units), e-carts (6,409), and E3W L5 Cargo vehicles (5,368) all posted healthy growth. YC Electric, Zeniak Innovation, and Hooghly Motors topped e-rickshaw sales, while JS Auto and Vijays Energy Industries led in e-carts.

However, not all was rosy: e-bus sales slipped to 832 units from August’s 910, and e-goods carrier sales dropped to 3,329 from 3,831. In the e-goods carrier segment, Tata Motors stood out with over 38% market share, trailed by Euler Motors and Mahindra Last Mile Mobility.

This robust performance underscores India’s accelerating shift toward electric mobility, even as global markets, like the US, report mixed fortunes for EV demand. With strong government support and expanding infrastructure, the momentum in India’s EV sector shows little sign of slowing as 2026 heads into its final quarter.
