India’s passenger vehicle market has just set a new benchmark. October 2026 saw domestic wholesale dispatches cross the 5 lakh-unit mark for the first time ever, with a total of 5,24,226 units shipped—an impressive 12.3% year-on-year (YoY) growth and a 14.1% jump over September 2026. Festival season demand, improved supply chains, and bullish dealership stocking propelled the market to this historic high.
Record-Setting Performances from Major Automakers
The momentum was led by all-time-high monthly dispatches from Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, and Kia India. Maruti Suzuki further tightened its grip on the top spot, while Tata Motors reclaimed its second-place position. Mahindra notched a new SUV sales record, and Hyundai and Kia posted their best monthly sales since entering the Indian market.
But not every brand shared in the cheer. JSW MG Motor saw retail sales climb to 7,082 units, pushing its market share to 1.39%. Nissan Motor improved to 3,273 units (up from 2,649 units last year), and Vietnamese entrant VinFast registered a sharp leap to 2,517 units from just 142 a year ago. On the flip side, Honda Cars and Renault India both reported significant YoY declines.
Retail sales for passenger vehicles in October 2026 stood at 5,07,768 units—a drop of 14.23% compared to October 2025’s 5,92,032 units, though the drop is seen in context of extraordinary sales last year and ongoing inventory corrections.
Electric Vehicles Spark a New Record
The electric vehicle (EV) segment was the real showstopper. EV retail sales surged to a record 3.55 lakh units in October 2026, a 45% YoY increase (up from 2,44,764 units a year ago), boosting EV market penetration to 11.5% from just 6% last year. The push came across electric two-wheelers, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles. Tata Motors led the EV passenger vehicle charge with 14,669 units sold (up 77.61% YoY), while Mahindra and MG sold 8,538 and 5,939 units, respectively.
Looking ahead, the industry expects total annual passenger vehicle retail sales to cross the 5 million mark for the first time in calendar year 2026, with total auto retail sales (across all categories) projected to hit nearly 32 million units. Strong festive demand, fresh launches—including Mahindra’s Vision S and BE 07 by June 2027—and robust EV appetite suggest the momentum isn’t slowing anytime soon.
