Apple announced on March 4, 2026, a sweeping update to its Mac laptop lineup, introducing the MacBook Air with M5 and the MacBook Pro powered by the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The MacBook Air is available for pre-order today, with units shipping on Wednesday, March 11. Both machines arrive with Apple’s new N1 wireless chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time on Mac, promising faster, more reliable wireless connectivity for everyday users and demanding professionals alike.
MacBook Air M5: Double the Storage, Faster Memory
The MacBook Air M5 now ships with a standard 512GB SSD — double the previous starting capacity — and is configurable up to 4TB. The M5 chip delivers unified memory bandwidth of 153GB/s, a 28 percent improvement over M4, enabling smoother multitasking and quicker app launches. The Air continues to come in 13- and 15-inch models in sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver, and supports up to two external displays via its two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Apple describes it as the most popular laptop for business users and says it delivers “unmatched value” for college students and creative professionals when combined with macOS Tahoe and Apple Intelligence.
MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max: Built for AI and Pro Workflows
The MacBook Pro lineup receives the more dramatic overhaul. M5 Pro and M5 Max are built on Apple’s new Fusion Architecture, which connects two dies into a single system on a chip. Apple claims a 30 percent CPU performance jump and a 50 percent increase in graphics performance compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max. AI workloads see even sharper gains: the new chips deliver up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing than M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8x faster AI image generation than M1 Pro and M1 Max. Storage starts at 1TB for M5 Pro and 2TB for M5 Max, with SSD speeds reaching up to 14.5GB/s. The MacBook Pro also supports up to two external displays with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max.
Connectivity and multimedia capabilities round out the upgrade. The new MacBook Pro features Thunderbolt 5 ports, each backed by a custom-designed controller built directly onto the chip — what Apple calls the industry’s most capable Thunderbolt 5 implementation. A 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support and studio-quality microphones are also included. Apple is claiming up to 24 hours of battery life on the new MacBook Pro. Both laptops align with Apple’s broader Apple 2030 carbon neutrality goal, with the energy-efficient M5 chips helping reduce lifetime power consumption across the product range.
