Australia’s cricket selectors have unveiled a 15-player preliminary squad for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, set to be played in Sri Lanka and India, with some bold inclusions and an unexpected focus on spin. Mitchell Marsh will lead the side, marking another captaincy stint since he assumed the role in 2025.
The most eye-catching selections revolve around fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, both named despite recent injuries. Joining them is hard-hitting lower-order bat Tim David, who suffered a hamstring strain during the Big Bash League on Boxing Day. Despite fitness question marks, chief selector George Bailey is backing the trio, stating, “They are tracking well and we are confident they will be available for the World Cup.” Final fitness scans for Cummins and David are due later this month, and teams have until January 31 to make last-minute changes.
Spin Department Gets a Boost
Recognizing the slow, turning pitches expected in Sri Lanka and India, selectors have leaned into spin, picking three frontline spinners and stacking the squad with bowling options. Matthew Kuhnemann, a left-arm spinner with just four T20Is (and no wickets) to his name, is perhaps the most surprising inclusion. He’s joined by fellow left-armer Cooper Connolly, who also boasts only one T20 wicket. The experienced Adam Zampa and part-timers Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short round out the spin attack. National selectors say the lineup “reflects the variety of conditions Sri Lanka and India may present.”
New faces in the squad include paceman Xavier Bartlett, allrounder Connolly, and Matt Short, none of whom have previously played in a T20 World Cup. These rising talents are in line for debuts on February 11, when Australia opens their campaign against Ireland in Colombo.
Looking to Bounce Back from 2024 Shock Exit
This fresh-look squad comes after Australia’s disappointing Super 8 exit in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where a shock defeat to Afghanistan ended their title hopes early. The selectors have not named Big Bash standout Mitchell Owen, while retaining mainstays like Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Travis Head, and Cameron Green for balance.
Australia will announce a separate squad for the T20I series against Pakistan leading into the main event. For now, the focus is on managing niggles and ensuring all players are fit and firing come February — in hopes of reclaiming their T20 World Cup crown on the subcontinent’s spinning tracks.
