Aging becomes a path of tragedy: When ignorrance and depression adds to the journey’s weight

Old age can be a journey filled with loss and loneliness. If neglected or depression encountered at tis point, this path becomes even more painful, reminding us of the vital role compassion and connection play in later life.

Though I am writing this article as content writer by abiding certain protocols, still wanted to share a very personal incident that I witnessed today that has really triggered me emotionally down to the core.

I along with one of my friend, were walking down the streets at the evening and it was almost about the time to get dark, at this point we saw a 70-73 year old man howling and coming towards our direction, at first due to unambiguity we thought it was a random intoxicated guy who was trying to pull a joke and by the time he came close to our range of interraction, we got to know that he was actually sobbing for real, his tear-streaked face revealed genuine pain.

Out of empathy we asked him why is he crying? He was unable to speak properly due to dyspnea, but as we tried to calm him down he sat down and told us that he got to know about one of his best friend who was out of town for some time his buddy like partner has just died. This had brought a sudden pause to every surrounding sounds that was coming into my ears except the visuals of the oldman weeping like a child. Both my friend and I, didnt know what to say, the oldman was so volatile at that point that we thought to accompany him to his home for his safety.

While we reached his place, on the journey he confessed that during his end days both of them had lost contacts as their relations got bitter due to some arguments. Now for some obvious reason he got overdriven by his emotions and said that his friend was shifted to his one and only daughter’s home unwillingly, and due to some neglegence he was left unattended and ignored that made him mentally weak and depressed, what this old veteran speculated to be the cause of his death.

We as young boys of this generation, while coming home together just walked silently without much talking for the rest of the time. Both of us might have wondered if being old have to go through sufferings like this, like seeing your friend loose their life before you loose yours, it is nothing less than a harsh journey, especially when depression and social disconnection come into play.

As we are talking about mental, physical, and psychological wellness during old age, this experience led me to consider key elements essential for a better quality of life in one’s later years.

Importance of Social Connections

As we grow older, maintaining social connections becomes an important aspect of our lives, yet it’s often overlooked. Accordingly, isolation from society can lead to a path of depression and can also cause cognitive decline. For that very reason, encouraging older individuals to join social groups or take part in community activities, can provide them with a sense of belonging. Hence maintaining close connection with family and friends is very important and can significantly enhance their well-being.

Mental Health in the Older Adults

Issues of mental wellbeing, such as depression and anxiety, are mostly overlooked among the older individuals. Mental health being as important a concern as physical health, older adults should also be monitored with regular check-up facilities, and family members should keep a track of any behavioral changes that might indicate mental health concerns.

Financial Security

Financial security is a matter of concern for many older adults, yet proactive financial planning is mostly overlooked. A structured retirement plan having a budget for healthcare, potential long-term care, and also the one which considers inflation is an ideal one. Individuals who envision their financial future as stable must take the guidance of financial advisors.

Staying Active

Regular physical activities are essential for aging adults but this important aspect is often ignored. Physical exercise helps maintain mobility, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, and improves mental health. Activities like walking, yoga, or light aerobics are suitable and can be adjusted to individual fitness levels.

Animal Companionship

Interaction with animals has therapeutic benefits for older adults, providing unconditional love and emotional warmth. Having a pet can help alleviate loneliness and improve mood, making them feel valued and less alone
