China’s space ambitions are set to reach new heights this week, as the Chang’e 7 mission readies for launch on August 24, 2026. The mission is poised to become the first ever to land directly on the rim of Shackleton Crater—a 21-kilometer-wide pit at the Moon’s south pole—where scientists have long suspected precious water ice is locked away in the eternal darkness.

Why the Lunar South Pole Matters

The quest for lunar water isn’t just about quenching future astronauts’ thirst. Water ice, trapped in the frigid, sunless craters where temperatures plunge below –200°C, could one day power rockets and sustain lunar bases. But just how much ice is there, how deep it lies, and even how it got there remain open questions. The Chang’e 7 mission hopes to answer these mysteries—and possibly reshape the new lunar “gold rush.”

James Head, a leading lunar scientist at Brown University, called Chang’e 7 “the most ambitious, comprehensive, and complex robotic lunar mission ever attempted by any nation or entity.” The mission’s hardware includes an orbiter, a lander, a rover, a hopper (designed to leap into shadowed depressions), and a supporting Queqiao-2 relay satellite. It also boasts a lineup of international science payloads, including a U.S.-supported experiment, signaling China’s openness to collaboration.

Cutting-Edge Science, International Collaboration

The Chang’e 7 lander will carry out in situ studies, carefully sampling soil and ice. Some samples—each weighing less than a gram—will be heated above 200°C to release and analyze trapped water and other volatiles. Instruments like mass and laser spectrometers will not only measure water content, but also trace its origins, potentially distinguishing between ice delivered by solar wind, comets, or asteroids. The mission also packs seismographs, panoramic cameras, magnetometers, spectrometers, and a lunar-penetrating radar.

The crown jewel, though, may be the hopping probe—engineered to survive landings in the extreme cold and darkness of the crater floor. If it succeeds, it could offer the first direct look at subsurface ice, its chemistry, and even its age—data that could reveal secrets about the origins of Earth’s water.
