A massive upgrade is underway for drivers with Google built-in: Gemini, Google’s conversational AI assistant, is now rolling out to vehicles as a replacement for the legacy Google Assistant. According to Google’s company blog and recent reports from TechCrunch and Android Authority, this change started in May 2026 and will reach both new and existing cars through an over-the-air software update.
If you’re driving a car from brands like Volvo, Polestar, or select Renault models, and you’re signed into your Google Account, you’ll soon see a prompt on your dashboard inviting you to try out Gemini. The rollout starts with English-language users in the United States, but no official end date has been provided. To activate Gemini, drivers can say “Hey Google,” tap the on-screen microphone, or press and hold their steering wheel’s voice command button.
What Can Gemini Do in Your Car?
Gemini isn’t just a new voice—it’s a major leap in AI smarts for in-car systems. Drivers can use it to check and summarize emails, send responses in over 40 languages, and even have Gemini translate messages on the fly. Need to send a quick note or add something to your to-do list while en route? Just ask. Gemini can also answer questions about your car by tapping into the manufacturer’s owner’s manual, control climate settings or EV charging status (if supported by Android Automotive OS), and help plan routes using real-world landmarks and filters in Google Maps.
Let’s say you’re caught in traffic on the way to meet a friend. Rather than fiddling with multiple apps, you can just tell Gemini, “Hey Google, tell James I’ll be late due to traffic but I still have the flowers,” and let it handle the rest—including translation if needed.
Broader Reach with Android Auto
The Gemini assistant is also being rolled out to Android Auto, which is available in more than 250 million cars worldwide. Android Auto users with the Gemini app installed on their phones will begin to see the new features over the next few months. On Android Auto, Gemini can summarize emails and messages, surface local business reviews via Google Maps, plan multi-stop routes, control playlists, and even hold free-form conversations to keep you engaged on long drives.
It’s important to note that this update is exclusive to Google’s ecosystem. If you use Apple CarPlay, nothing will change for you. And while Gemini promises smarter, more contextual interactions, early reviews suggest your experience will depend on your network connection and the permissions you grant.
For now, keep an eye on your car’s display for that update prompt—and get ready to meet your new road trip co-pilot.
