The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) stormed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table after a thumping 33-run win over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Hyderabad on Wednesday, May 6. SRH’s batters went on an all-out assault, smashing 17 sixes en route to a mammoth 235/4, taking full advantage of Punjab’s error-riddled fielding performance. For PBKS, it was a night to forget in the outfield, with three dropped catches proving costly as their playoff push took a major hit.

SRH’s Batting Blitz and PBKS’ Fielding Woes

The Sunrisers’ top order fired on all cylinders. Abhishek Sharma kickstarted the six-fest with four maximums, Travis Head chipped in with three, and the dynamic duo of Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan added four sixes each. Nitish Reddy contributed a quickfire unbeaten 29, helping SRH post a daunting total. Punjab’s sloppy fielding repeatedly let SRH off the hook—Shashank Singh, who has now fumbled four catches this season (the most by any PBKS player), was among the culprits. The team’s catching efficiency has dropped to 73.6 percent, only marginally better than bottom-placed Delhi Capitals.

PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting couldn’t hide his frustration after the game. “It’s a bit of a virus for us. We have put a lot of catches down this season,” Ponting admitted, bemoaning the fact that even intensified catching drills hadn’t solved their woes. “Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is following him everywhere,” he added, sympathizing with the embattled fielder.

Punjab’s Chasing Struggles and Record-Breaking Losing Streak

Chasing 236 was always going to be a tall order, and PBKS never recovered after losing early wickets in the powerplay. Cooper Connolly’s maiden IPL hundred was the lone bright spot but ultimately proved a consolation as the Punjab innings sputtered against the SRH seamers, especially after Pat Cummins reintroduced pace and cutters on a pitch that slowed down as the game progressed. Even PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer admitted they gifted away 30-40 runs with their poor fielding and execution.

This defeat marks Punjab’s third consecutive loss after a seven-match unbeaten run, and their ninth straight defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad—a new IPL record, surpassing RCB’s unwanted streak against CSK at Chepauk. With three matches left and SRH now at 14 points, one more win should seal their playoff berth, while Punjab’s hopes hang in the balance unless their outfielding improves—fast.
